My computer's Windows "Explorer" started randomly crashing about a month ago. It doesn't seem to happen more than 1 or 2 times a week. I saved the last two mini dumps as well as a !analyze -v log on the latest dump. Anyone know where I can get these dump files looked at to see what is causing this issue? Windows Ultimate 64bit. Interestingly, when I went to that web page while on windows7 it asked me to download a media creator tool (as you an see with the 32 and 64 bit download boxes) When I went to that same site while on my 98 box, instead of that tool, it showed me the full 2+ gig of each to download--I don't know why that was different (but easier for me)
I have a question about putting back clones or images. with windows 98 I just put the image back onto a hard drive from another hard drive. With windows xp, I can not do that unless the image is less than 14 days old do to security issues. If I did, then my profile would have to be taken out of the network and put back in so that I can be recognized. Any work around. My images are pure with the latest versions of programs without me actually working on the computer. That is what I like
Because it has all of the wrong drivers, Windows will act quite odd, and possibly not boot. It has, however been designed to protect your physical pc.

If all you are trying to do is make use of the old hard drive, there should be no problem. Just boot Win 8 and it should see your old drive as another drive letter, probably E: if you have a DVD drive as drive D:. If the old drive does not show up at first, then run Disk Manager to assign a drive letter to it. I am not sure on Win 8 how to get to Disk Manager, but try searching for "diskmgmt.msc".
Hi Mark Rode, The issue I had when I put the Virtual XP on my Windows 7 Dell Optiplex 760 in order to run the iPhoto Plus program was in the Virtual XP Pro mode my printer and all other devices were not recognized and called for me to add the software. I haven't figured how to do that so I still cannot use my program. What am I doing wrong? It seems silly to "add printer" when the printer is already on the machine. How do I get the VIRTUAL XP OS to recognize the Windows 7 software/devices? I
You are saying that you have the printer driver installed on the Windows 7 (host) machine, but not on the Windows XP (guest) machine? If so, the only ways to print data from the VM are 1: transfer the data to the host machine, or 2: install the driver in the guest machine, and make sure that the networking, is fully functional on the VM, or if it's a parallel connector, that that port is dedicated to the VM. Treat Virtual XP as a separate computer. It doesn't know it is running on top of Windows 7. Install the XP printer driver in Virtual XP just like you would if this was a brand new build and Windows 7 did not exist. The same holds true for all devices that you are allowing XP to <see>
When you are running in the "Virtual XP Pro mode" on your computer, realize that this "virtual" mode is like a separate computer. You've never installed a printer on it, so you need to use the install disk (or file on your hard disk) to install the printer to the VIRTUAL XP OS when it is running, so that this OS can print.

ICORS, which is our LISTSERV, and manages all our posts is having a problem with Microsoft email addresses .Other mainstream addresses could be involved as well. Our ListServe's SMTP server is being blocked by three different blacklisting services Backscatter, Lashback and SpamCannibal. This was caused when a ICORS IP number was hacked and abused. This means that when these email addresses are tested they bounce, and are automatically removed from the lists. ICORS is in the process of changing the IP number to a new <clean> one which should end all the drops.

I have since loaded the same software on all of my Dell computers, total number of 7, since then. I have always been able to use the software on my NON APPLE computers. I have NEVER owned an APPLE computer. It is only since I got Windows 7 PRO with a 64 bit rather then the 32 bit that I cannot use the software anymore.

There is a way to run your old software. The first thing to try is to bring up the properties box on the shortcut you launch the program from by mouse right click.. selecting it, and then left click to bring up the context menu, and choose Properties. Then click on the compatibility tab and put a check in Run this program in compatibility mode for, and select XP then push apply. Try and launch the program.
Well if it absolutely will not run, you may be able to do so (as others have suggested) by downloading and installing MS's XP Mode. This includes setting up a virtual machine (one of the downloads), then setting up XP mode and installing your program "on it". You may need to be running Win 7 (8?) Pro or Ultimate--of this I'm not sure. Also, have you also adjusted the properties of the executable to specify the compatibility. (Right-click on the program in its folder and use the compatibility tab to choose a "configuration" that will allow it to run. HTH

You are very right to be cautious! I am struggling with Windows 8.1. I have been using windows since 3.1 I believe, Windows 95, 98 etc. In my opinion Windows XP was the best. Every time I try to download something with Windows 8 they add all kinds of extras. As cautious as I am, I have ended up with some very nasty programs that will not un-install. I have restored it twice so far. I do try to remember to create a restore point prior to downloading anything.
Yes you are. Cnet was a fairly good site, but has degraded a lot. I'm guessing that you didn't properly avoid the sneaky toolbar and home setting checkboxes of the cnet installer. You can change your homepage and remove the toolbar, but if your browser opens by its self, you need the help of an antivirus. If it had malicious software, uninstalling the original software does nothing for you. Simply running the software is enough. I have an ASUS computer running Win7 64, and if I turn off the computer while it's booting up it brings me to a screen where it gives me a choice to either run "system repair" or "boot normally". System repair is selected and it tells me to use the arrow keys to select Boot Normally. When I tried to select that it wouldn't let me. I tried tab keys, page down keys, arrow keys, even the mouse. So I ended up in the System Repair screen and managed to get to a place where I had a restart option.
Well to begin with it is NEVER EVER a good idea to shut your computer off during a reboot!!!
That said what happens is that when you do that it leaves scrambled files on the hard drive. At worse they get totally corrupted and IF the corrupted files were OS files, guess what! You will probably lose the OS and probably all your data! Then you would need to re-install Windows. It also is hard on the hard drive also.
It's a good question, and I've never heard of any such incident. Do your arrow keys work? Were you using numpad arrows with numlock off? Could you press enter to immediately enter the selected option? If not, BIOS needs to be patched or reconfigured. Also, it is ALWAYS the arrow key and nothing else which you use to select an item. It may be that Windows detected something that it wouldn't let you ignore. Always avoid hard shutdowns if possible; they destroy Windows.
My recent admin privilege issue got me wondering if it would be possible to create a shutdown script which requires admin privileges. Maybe if you give it full privileges through the registry? I assume you can't get a uac prompt on shutdown.
The first thing you should do is have it cleaned. It could be overheating, and that's an easy thing to do. I really couldn't guess of other issues without knowing more. From what I know, I'd say that it's likely to be a hardware (probably motherboard or power supply) issue

Yes ,I have played around a lot with this concept if nothing else than the fact that otherwise you constantly have to be running the CD\DVD drive.
The idea is to copy the files from the CD and save them to your hard drive. You could do this without "assistance", but the preferred way is to create an ISO ,save that to your hard drive and then employ a virtual CD program that creates virtual CD or DVD drives. (An "ISO " is an image file that contains all the necessary data to run an installation or program.)
This is the same issue I sent a while back, but I know a little more about it, and I figured I'd try you guys again. A long while ago, I had a stroke of brilliance: run a .reg file containing an entire registry backup, un the computer with Windows running. Evidently, Windows lets you try to do that. It failed, and ever since, I've had this error when I run a lot of software: "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\mscoreei.dll could not be loaded". I renamed the file to "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\was v4.0.30319", for diagnostic purposes. I am now getting "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\mscorwks.dll could not be loaded" I
Sometimes, it comes down to 'live with it' or spend hours to hopefully 'fix it'. Without any personal experience with this particular issue, maybe setting a restore point, doing a registry backup (also copy to an external drive), then run a registry cleaner. I think Glary Utilities is one that may be available as a free download or a 30 day trial. Run the reg cleaner and see if it resolves the problem. Some of the other utilities included may help if the reg cleaner doesn't resolve it. Net framework can be deleted and reinstalled as well. Of course, everything
While a registry cleaner might find the discrepancies ,I'm not particularly fond of them, because you can create more problems than you started with, unless you know what you're doing and are prepared to scrutinize all "the faults" it finds.
In your case I would start by running SFC (System File Checker)

In my opinion the site is very safe and reputable. I have come to trust everything I use from there. I normally use MalwareBytes and Spybot, also some second opinions. The two main things were: Two restore points appear to have been deleted, and I deleted shortcuts in my recycle bin for which I have duplicates on my desktop, upon restart, these shortcuts disappeared from my desktop. I would suggest that you try it without the quotes. (I just tested using the Windows 7 command prompt and it worked for me without the quotes, but not with them)

Ok, here's what I did: if exist C:\windows\system32\drivers\file.sys ( rename C:\windows\system32\drivers\file.sys "file.wassys" ) else ( rename C:\windows\system32\drivers\file.wassys "file.sys" ) It worked in admin terminal, but when I ran the batch file as admin, (or otherwise) it didn't work.

I removed the quotes altogether with the same result: yes in terminal, no in batch file.

nvm, I fixed that issue when I run it in the terminal by typing the filename it works, but not if I run the file as admin through gui.

I tried the batch file and ran it by clicking on it from Windows Explorer - works just fine. Could it be the location of the batch file? Try placing it in another folder and see what happens.
I know this has been covered before, but I am having to work from my laptop, Toshiba Satellite L675 running M$ Windows 7 SP1 so can't access my saved files nor links right now. I think each email system has its own storage methodology. I don't think you can simply copy aol emails for example, and save them in outlook simply by moving the folders. I'm not sure but this might work for you. Open Outlook Express in a small window and create a folder on the desktop next to it. Select the emails you want to save by highlighting and then drag and drop to the new folder. This should work for the other files as well. Copy the folder to the zip drive, usb key, cd, etc. and then copy from there to the new computer. Depending on the email client you may be able to drag and drop the emails from the folder to the new email client the same way you

I removed the original Office program and cloud installed a new copy. I get the same error message - "Microsoft Word (et.al.) have stopped working. We will investigate and tell you why, if we know." You didn't mention which Windows version you are running (adding this basic information is always helpful when posting questions), but I assume Vista or greater.
While you may be the administrator, by default programs are not run with full administrator privilege to protect malicious SW from more damage to the system by running at heightened security level.

I assume you restarted the computer and checked to see if Office would run after the restart. I suggest you un-install Office and reinstall it to see if the re-installation of Office corrects the Office starting problem.

I'm not familiar with win 8 myself, but the last few versions have included tracking of software and creation of restore points which would enable you to 'roll back' the software to an earlier date when things were still working ok. You will need to read and follow the directions, especially the cautions. This will allow you to remove the passwords from a Windows system after booting from the disc you have just created.

There are lot's of bootable password recovery tools. I like to use Ultimate Boot CD, because it's an all-in-one troubleshooting and utility cd. I've never tried it's password recovery tool though. Just Google around a little, there are tons of them, and many with great recommendations.

John, If you're getting your email via roadrunner, they may have this software installed on their end of the email system. Sometimes other users ask that certain email be flagged as spam rather than simply unsubscribing themselves from it. Roadrunner could be applying that spam block to all their customers. Just to add one thing to Peter's info is if you have JAVA installed this is where you may have gotten it! I had the same problem as you do. I had to do a system restore to get totally rid of it. If you allow Java to auto update you might want to think twice about that. I do a manual update on JAVA and any other programs that install over the internet. Careful. The Ask toolbar also installs by default on Glary Utilities, a free maintenance program. Always uncheck the default installs until you read what they do. They are especially prevalent on freeware. Love Glary, I use it after web and before shutdown. Hate Ask.com. I think I got rid of it in safe mode, then picked up its entrails with either CCleaner and/or Glary. Also, I disabled Java a long time ago. I got rid of Java on my own computer several months ago. Sometimes an "install" or "update" still crops up, but I deny any of them, and I'm exceptionally careful about M$ updates now too (different incident that I managed to fix).

A lot will depend on how familiar you are with writing C/C++/C# applications for Windows, and especially with Windows "internals". I've been out of that for a while now.... As I recall, scanning through the list of running processes isn't too tricky -- hmmm, you might need the list of loaded "modules" (.EXEs and .DLLs) rather than processes. Your assumption is that it is a Microsoft program causing the problem. There are a few possibilities I can think of. The first is that somebody is spoofing a Microsoft program. Another is that one of the programs you installed might have changed a setting or a line in the Microsoft program/code (maliciously or otherwise.) Perhaps, somehow there is corruption in the Microsoft coding. Or, perhaps the program that is scanning the Microsoft program is just wrong. It is always nice to get an explanation of what went wrong. It has been my experience if it is low to use a program like Acronis and clone the drive to a larger drive. Drives are cheap and the time it takes to do is minimal compared to a band-aid fix of moving stuff around.

You don't mess up your computer that way, provided Acronis makes a true clone including boot files and I expect it to do that.
Just make sure that Acronis does not erase the source (C:\ ) Look carefully for any indication that it might do so. I've had this happen with other "cloners".
Lets take a look at what type of drives you have, IDE drives with the flat wide cables on them will need to be addressed. and the proper type purchased. the thin flat cable drives are SATA drives and addressing is not necessary.
1) the drive currently assigned as drive C is the one running out of space. Mark it drive C and write down the drive manufacturer and size. The data drive D, remove it and mark it as drive D using a sharpie. Take the new drive and install it in the drive D slot. Mark it New

Yes, but if you want to use a service Microsoft owns, or want to purchase an app from the MS Store, you will have to log in. MS owns Skype, XBOX, Skydrive, Hotmail, Outlook mail, Windows live mail, Sky drive and a few others. It wouldn't be so bad if MS would decide on exactly what all in compassing service they wish to put everything under and put out documentation that explains how this is all suppose to work instead

Eugene, Hopefully it is just an issue with the bios startup device list... Have you tried to get to the boot menu by pressing F12 repeatedly? It should provide you will a list of devices to boot from. (CD, Hard drive, Network, etc.) If you see the hard drive select it and see if it boots. If it does then you will need to change the boot device order in the Bios by Pressing F1 repeatedly to get into the Setup program. Follow the instructions below. Eugene, What happens if you just hook up the Hard Drive and not the DVD? If it boots that way, there might be an issue with the DVD drive. However, failing that test are your Hard drive and DVD drive connected by different data cables on the motherboard? One of the controllers on the motherboard might be bad, though that is a guess. I recently updated Firefox and re-installed pop-up blockers. I'm still getting the annoying pop-ups, but now I have 2 new ones. One is the FaceBook 'F' in the upper left hand corner of my screen. When I pass the cursor over it, it turns into a 'forward' button, which says: http://partners.cldrta.com/flaxh/ga.swf. I'm afraid go go there. When I right click on it, I am offered several options, one of which is "Remove this flash" which, when I click on it, will go away, only to return at my next site.
Try disabling the Social Fixer Add-on Go to tools in your Menu bar and click on Add-ons and then click on Extensions. If you have Social Fixer in there disable- and remove it.
I am not an expert, but I tried that 'partners' link and it is now invalid. So you might have gone to a bad site that let a trojan/virus into your system.
You may want to turn off Java (tools; Add-ons; plugins) and see if that may help.
You might also want to run Malwarebytes to check if it can find anything.

I'm using a Surface Pro 128 which is a touch screen computer. On a touch screen using Windows 8 slide your finger from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen to close a program on the Start Screen. Programs used from desktop with have the usual red X to close them or the other ways to close them. The buttons are hidden. If you go to the center top of the window edge and hover a hand will appear that lets you pull down the window ...and if you do the same on the left... I think it is left... there is a hidden menu that will appear when you hover over it. Of course ALT F4 will close anything in windows.. including windows, just remember that laptops generally have their own function key assignments that work with the F keys. And the windows key plus M will minimize all open windows so you can see the desktop.
Well I dicovered the print problem of printing just 1 page . Actually it was not a printer or adobe or even web issue. It is Hotmail. The problem was consistent if you hit any browser print icon while in Hotmail and yet all was fine when you hit the print icon of hotmail itself! Off to report that to hotmail now 😁

Cisco Network Magic has a notification of any intruders into your LAN. They used to have a free fully functioning trial period of about 2 weeks (if I remember correctly) when you can determine if you have an intruder. Robert, You don't specifically mention this, but have you chosen the security parameters to setup like WPA/WPA2 and the MAC address filtering? The MAC filtering is a list of MAC address (network cards) that are allowed to use the connection.

Do you encrypt your wireless? WEP isn't sufficient to prevent a determined attacker from decrypting your traffic (sensitive communications should be using HTTPS, even if wireless encryption is also used...), but it *does* require a PSK (Pre-Shared Key -- i.e., a password) to join the network. (The TrueCrypt I've heard of encrypts the data on a drive, but does nothing to secure it in transmission (and so isn't relevant for this), but there might be an Australian product using that name that does something different. Your wireless router should be able to show you a list of currently connected clients,

Gregg, I am in agreement with Hugh. Given enough time and effort, you can pretty much crack any security implementation physical or technological. The reasonable thing to do is to make the task too difficult or too time consuming for the average troublemaker. With the example of WiFi, using stronger encryption and limiting the MAC address (network cards) that access the network are good and simple starts. Me too, I worry someone will hack it to use my connection to illegally download copy-righted material and the music or movie industry comes to me for money. So for now I change my passphrase often and turn my wifi router off at night and while i'm at work. Can't hack it if the surge protector power switch is turned off and i'll notice the slower connection if they hack it while i'm using it. If we make them not convenient for them they'll go hack someone else.
On my Linksys router I simply log on and go to the "My Network" tab. This shows all the connections and their permissions. It includes active/inactive recent connections as well. Most routers have such a page and you can find out what you need to know here.

That does sound like a long time, but success is success. Don't worry about the amount of software you install as it has virtually nothing to do with the speed of your computer.

It IS too long. Unfortunately, until you find the solution that works for you, it is not totally unexpected. Let's look at some numbers. With 216GB in 14 hrs translates to 4.4 MB/sec which is at the very low end. For my own backups, I try to hit 2GB/minute as a goal. This is a data rate of 34MB/sec. Most often the rate drops to 12MB/sec, which is still almost 3 times faster than what you had.
That doesn't sound remotely reasonable for a C:\ partition that contains only the operating system, registry and installed programs. Are you sure it is ONLY the C:\ partition that is being imaged and not the entire computer?
Some items you could check:
1. What is the size of the used portion on your C: partition? How does 216 GB compare to that? Usually the C: partition is not that large.
I'd like to recommend what I consider "the best" data backup software - SecondCopy by Centered Systems. I use Acronis True Image for system partition images (although I'm looking for something else because lately it is not restoring properly, but for my data partition, I use 2nd copy to MAINTAIN (on demand - I don't use background) an uncompressed duplicate of my data partition. Well as I mentioned changing anything and looking at print preview on web broswers showed everything as 1 page. Well yesterday it showed and printed normally clear out of the blue--so I thought maybe one of windows update files did it. On my system, the location of the restore setting program is: C:\Windows\System32\SystemPropertiesProtection.exe Of course, you may just navigate through the normal Windows program structure to find it. Hi, Problem had a silly solution for printing only one page in web browsers that affected none of the other programs on the machine--just the print icon from the tool bar or drop down menus, but was fine when printing from a web pages print mode. Remember the adobe settings were grayed out I went back a frew months to a po restore point via safe mode since regular mode did not work and never has. Well I uninstalled out chrome and firefox and even pulled as much as I could out of the registry Reinstalled them, even uninstalled and reinstalled the printer to no avail. IE 8 would not uninstall nor could i even delete the folder out from program files--all I could do is reset from the advanced tab. I am out of ideas. One person suggested delting out the user and putting in a new user, but since it is a one person user to the machine who has administrative rights, I doubt that would help

What's your operating system? In xp, I'd go to My Documents/Tools/Folder options/View and tick the Show hidden files and folders box. From there, right click and choose properties and un-check the hidden box.

When I run AVG I get a message about two files being infected in the recycle bin on another drive, not my main drive. I'm not worried about the infections, says something about a broken signature.
I'm just tired of getting the message. How can I remove the files from the recycle bin when I can't seem to get to it?
My experience has been that there is only one recycle folder for the computer for all drives. There should be a shortcut to it on the desktop. Right click on it and select "empty recycle bin". Then confirm it. That should get rid of the files.

I think this hard drive used to be a main drive, that's why it's got a recycle bin all it's own. So it doesn't show up on the desktop, or windows explorer. Can something be done in DOS?

I think you should review your folder options. Try going to Control Panel, click folder options (this is in win 7). Under the general tab, check off 'show all folders'. You can also click the view tab, another bunch of options there that may make the folder show up, if it doesn't show up after checking off 'show all folders'. Paul Hachmeyer
All drives have a recyle bin and recycle folder but they are generally hidden (protected operating system files). If you connect the drive that has the infected files to your computer you can then empty these recyle files using the desktop icon. But if they are infected files you should probably take whatever steps necessary to prevent your computer from benig re-infected.
I don't believe this drive is bootable. It is connected, but I don't see a recycle bin. I'm not so much worried about the infected files, as the notice when I run a scan. Just want to be able to get rid of them.
I checked show all folders and show hidden files, still can't find the recycle bin on my F drive. Also did a search on both drives and can't find the file when I type in just the first few letters of the filename.
Diane, I don't know how comfortable you are with command line type things, but there is a way to force the emptying of all recycle bins in the Windows system. You can copy and paste the right command ( to keep from missing a space) from the web page listed below based on your operating system.
This is just a thought but could you not remove AVG completely from your computer then immediately re-install and run a new scan. I would think this would get rid of the notice unless the same infected file is there and once again detected .

I don't use AVG myself but I read that there are settings you can change so that it doesn't report certain information...........that may be an option for you to look at.
a.. Open the AVG program. b.. Click on Computer scanner. c.. Click Change scan settings. d.. Select the Set additional scan reports... and adjust the reporting. e.. Alternatively, you can change these settings in menu Tools -> Advanced settings.
I went to the link below and was able to empty the recycle bin on only my F drive (didn't want to empty C drive's bin), once I told "command prompt" to run as administrator. Then I ran AVG again and ... those infected files didn't show up!

When you install Adobe Reader, two pieces actually get installed. One is the standalone Reader application, and the other is the browser plugin which takes control of the display window when your browser fetches content that is in PDF format. Recently a toolbar MIXDIDJI appeared--I successfully uninstalled that tool bar, its accompanying web search and take over of home pages. I also updated to adobe reader XI and a failed flash update. Now, when i print from any printer using the print icon of the browser it only prints the first page of text instead of all of it. If I use the Print friendly version within the web page itself that prints out fine as well as printing from all other programs. Going back to
This is a known issue with Acrobat. Its a setting within Acrobat and has nothing to do with your browser.

Try going to restore points in Safe Mode. My XP machine is ,"on", then F8, then choose Safe Mode. You can also run Malwarebytes, Norton and other repair tools from Safe Mode.

However, if "safe mode" and "restore" are included in the OS, try shutting off "restore", start in "safe mode", use an anti-virus tool like Malwarebytes to delete Alureon, restart the OS in normal mode and turn back on the "restore" function. Some viruses will place themselves in the restore file and keep regenerating themselves. By temporarily stopping the restore function, the restore files are deleted and then you start over again.
You could try a bootable antivirus, ultimate boot cd contains several, and Ithink back-track linux contains a built-in rootkit scanner.

I have a computer set-up for live recording of my garage band. It's a Pentium 4 3.20GHz hyper-threading rig with 2 gig ram, a 250 gig WD SATA drive, 2 pci cards connected to (2) 8-channel microphone interface units and xp home sp2 with a 2046mb paging file size setting (too much ??).
First I'm going to answer your question regarding the file splitter. There are numerous free ones to be found ,but one I have used satisfactorily for years is HJSplit http://www.hjsplit.org/ "HJSplit for Windows and Linux support file sizes of over 100 Gigabytes, MD5 checksums, file-compare, "run without install" and both editions are fully portable."
Audacity (open source free) does almost anything you might want to do with an audio file, including splitting it up. The split will not be automatic, and you will need to set the split points, but it does work well.
You could split and re-encode the files into something more manageable with something like Audacity, but what you really need is more horsepower. A faster CPU, hard drive, and lots more RAM. There is no magic software out there that will compensate for your old hardware. Any kind of media editing is going to demand the fastest speeds you can afford. Good luck.
I ended up taking the hard drive with the large files and connecting it to my intel core 2 quad machine. Adobe Audition was then able to open the files and from there, I was able to split the songs into individual files.
This other pc was used mainly for video but now, I guess it will be my recording machine. Since it's a mid-tower size mobo, the interface cards take up all my pc slots (2) and had to remove my audigy card. Oh well... sacrifices must be made!
I have been using a program called "Calendar Creator Plus v1.0" for many years. The copyright date shows 1987, the year Windows V2 came out. I have used it with Windows 3 through Vista 32. It includes lists of events (i.e. holidays) and allows me to enter my own events. The events repeat on the correct day every year. I too had used an older version of Calendar Creator and then upgraded to version 9. The reason for not upgrading further was that I saw no need to spend the money to do so. Version 9 does have an issue with printing in that the select printer function does not work. Otherwise, after spending some time configuring the program (which is not always evident how to do) it works just fine. You might want to see some surplus sales of older versions to try it cheaply, that is what I did ($9).
I use an illuminated USB keyboard, which I believe I ordered off of Amazon, but it's the same size as a regular keyboard and requires no special driver. (I think at one point I found a switch to turn the illumination off, but I never do that and can't find it now...) Try opening the file in notepad. Sometimes the file will have an indication in the first few lines as to what type of file it is, even if most of it looks like hieroglyphics. Microsoft Office 10/Excel uses .xlsx as the default extension, not .xls. Paul Hachmeyer

I tried to uninstall Free Zone Alarm Firewall. I used Revo Uninstaller without any success. Apparently ZA files are hidden and it tried to download itself and I think causes my PC to crash at times. Just for a primer how to deal with applications such as Firewall- or AV programs ,you need to know the exact procedure. These programs typically use at least one or more services related to them. They automatically run at startup and can't be stopped using Task Manager. So the first thing to do is to stop them via the Services applet. Alan, There is a way, but it involves changing the display resolution on your computer. It is a temporary way and has to be done each time you want to login with classic yahoo.
Changing resolution can be done quickly if required. It seems that somebody hacked into my daughters pc and is downloading massive amounts of gigabytes. AT&T is now charging her for those gigabytes and recently had to disconnect internet service because of the astonomical bill. So I have 2 questions: Is it possible for some hadker to do this? And has anyone ever heard getting charged for excess gigabytes? We both had the residetial plan from AT&T. The details of your plan are readily available to you, so that part is easy. Compare the GB used to the GB allowed. You're not the first to fall afoul of this rule. As for hacking, the most likely culprit is an unsecured or poorly secured WiFi connection. Have someone knowledgeable check your encryption setup. I'd also consider calling the police, as this is a felony in some jurisdictions. Other hacks are possible, so a full Malware/Virus scan is in order. A rootkit scan might be a good idea as well. It's disappointing that Verizon isn't offering more assistance.
