just $0.02, with some "brand" name PCs I serviced, I had few "huge" problem
with those pre-cable-select set drive, they only work with cable select,
nothing else, which makes things much harder. I'd say avoid cable select
setting as much as possible, also avoid PCs which come with such setting.

eg. here is a real case, not just a story someone made up:
once, I was asked to "move" an internal Zip drive and a DVD from a brand
name machine to a new case with new mobo and new HDD + CDRW. the problem is,
the DVD won't work unless I set to cable select, with limited drive bay
inside the new case (and the mobo blocked the 3rd 5" bay), so the only way
to set it up was to connect both CD drives on same cable, which the customer
strongly against it (won't go with CD to CD copy on fly). because I can't
set DVD as master and HDD as slave (even I could, customer will kill me with
that set up), I could only tell him either get a bigger case or live with
it. bad for business (my boss was ok with it, since it's not my fault), I
know, but I could do nothing to these "cable select" madness.

*feel free to flame me, but please do so by sending to my email directly.
