In order not to have to reboot, you have to refresh the SCSI bus.

Turn on the scanner.
Go to START >>> Settings >>> Control Panel >>> System
Click on the Device Manager Tab
Press the Refresh Button
Your Umax Scanner will appear in the Window, or maybe not, depends on the
driver.
Click OK to exit out

You can now use your Scanner.
