Consider upgrading the modem to a 56K model. Since
the modem is likely on the MAVE card, you need to disable
the on-card modem in CMOS. You may have to sacrifice
the COM port since it is configured in CMOS for the modem.
You may get the COM port back if you replace sound card.

     Thanks much for the good info. After d/l ing the files for the MWAVE  I
finally got the modem to be recognized.  Unfortancely, right after that I
installed IE4.01 and now win95 stops with the error message "VFbackup cannot
load vfd.vxd.  Run setup again"  If I do this, I will lose a lot of work and
a lot of trial & error on setting dmas & port settings to match this modem.
Do you know what the error message is referring too? And maybe a way around
running setup agaain?
