On the 26th (or the 24th?) of the month (I'm not sure if it's any month, or
just the month August) the CIH Virus supposedly overwrites the CMOS ram. On
old boards you could stop this by setting a jumper to prevent BIOS changes.
On new boards this data gets constantly updated and as far as I know you
cannot prevent this anymore. The producers of quite a few Anti-virus
packages advertise the ability to get rid of this virus. If you've already
been hit, the only thing you can do is get a new CMOS chip from your MOBO
producer, or, if you have a second computer and a CMOS-Flasher, you could
reprogram it. I saw your other question about CMOS-flashers and there is a
company here in Germany that sells them complete for about 145 DM (About 90$
US). The problem is they only ship in the EU, I have contacted them to ask
if there is a possibility that they could ship outside of Europe, but I
haven't got a reply yet. When I do I'll contact you Off-List.
