Hello Dale, lets go through these questions 1 at a time.

No, you shouldn't have to install anything first.

WIN98 automatically detects IDE CD-ROMS and installs the drivers for them.
If you want to use your CD-ROM drive in DOS you'll have to put the device
driver in your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. There is a nice universal CD-ROM
driver on your WIN98 Bootdisk.

I've had this happen a few times and I've narrowed the problem down to 2
things:

1: (My guess) A RAM problem is causing the mistake. Have you upgraded your
RAM recently?

2: The CD-ROM isn't working correctly. After you've booted with your WIN98
Boot disk, dont execute the SETUP prog. but copy the contents of the WIN98
directory to a temporary directory on your hard drive, and run the install
from there.For some reason copying under DOS seems to cause less problems
than when the setup routine does it.
