Martin,

Is this machine purely a DOS machine?  If so the modem you purchased is
likely a WINMODEM variation.  These types of modems use the CPU to perform
the function of the UART chip installed on standard modems.  This allows the
manufacturer to reduce costs and price to the consumer.  Unfortunately,
these modems will not work in DOS, only Win 3.x or 95.  Also, being CPU
intensive, you probably don't want to use one in anything less than a
Pentium or fast 486 machine.

Opinions vary, and I've heard horror stories about these modems.
Personally, I have a USR Winmodem operating at 56k on my Pentium 166 and it
works flawlessly.
