I missed the beginning of this, but the other thing  that would come 
into play on the 590 is  whether  you  use the serial port or USB port 
on the radio.    If connected via the USB port, you need to install the 
virtual comm driver from Kenwood and  use whatever port  is assigned. 
(Or  change that number to  some other unused port).   If connected via 
the RS-232 port on the radio,  you would set your software to whatever 
comm port on the pc, or USB to serial adapter you are connected to. 
These 3 ports (USB adapter,  USB virtual comm port, or "real" serial 
port) on the pc would all have different numbers.
