Hello all,

I have great admiration for the research work being done in Europe, and
especially in Italy. I am therefore reluctant to disagree with Mr.
Guandalini, however, Grefte J, et. al. "Slow and incomplete histological
and functional recovery in adult gluten sensitive enteropathy" J. Clin.
Pathol. 1988; 41: 886-891 cite 2 to 4 years on gluten-free diet as still
being at a stage where recovery of the intestinal mucosa is still
incomplete, and they approximate the recovery to be approximately 66% of
normal. This is a report of a study done specifically to track the
rate of recovery on the diet.

Whereas this group is comparing the celiac jejunum to that of a normal
person, perhaps Mr. Guandalini is applying a different standard, which
could lead to a misunderstanding here.

I hope this is helpful
Best Wishes,
