First, I would like to thank everyone who responded. 



People said that they took the following supplements to improve bone health: 

1. Evista

2. Evista for 10 years, then got worse. Now the person is on Boniva infusions and also takes Calcium, Vitamin D, and exercises.

3. Whole foods, Cal-mag Citrate, and Nature's Bounty Vitamin D.

4. Boniva once-a-month, plus Caltrate and Vitamin D twice daily

5. Citrical and Vitamin D.

6. Broth from chicken/beef bones.

7. Walgreens brand Calcium Citrate and Vitamin D.

8. Solgar Vitamin D 1000 IU and Viactiv Calcium Chews.

9. Country Life Calcium and Vitamin D3.

10. Daughter takes Os-Cal and Nature Made Vitamin D, two times per day (has osteoperosis at age 14 because of Celiac).

11. Os-Cal and Viactiv. 

12. Prunes: Eats 4-6 a day. Thinks 10-12 is better.

13. Reliv Classic (has 72 nutrients).

14. Oscap and Oscap Plus, also of interest to Celiacs are MediClear and Methyl Cobalamain (B-12), by Thomas Research or Thorne Research. 

15. Vitamin D 400 IU soft gels (Solar Brand), which are capsules with Vitamin D suspended in oil inside. He cuts the ends off and squeezes the oil in a glass of milk three times a day. 

16. Other things for bone health besides Calcium: Vitamin K, B12, and micronutrients. 

17. One person read an article regarding Fosteum (Genistein) as an option for osteoporosis. It is made from soy beans which contain genisten (a plant estrogen), Vitamin D, and Zinc. It requires a prescription. If you have breast cancer, do not take. 

18. One person has a "magic" recipe: Blend feet of chicken or cow, bones (marrow bones, veal shank), bay leaf, onion, carrot, celery, and other veggies. Spices to taste. Cover with water and simmer for 5 to 6 hours. Drink a cup every day. Refrigerate unused portion. Will last about a week. Says it is very effective. 

19. Solgar Calcium Citrate, 2 tablets, 500 mg; Magnesium Citrate, 2 tablets, 400 mg; and Solar Natural D 1000 caplets. Person has low Vitamin D levels because of autoimmune problems. Person takes additional magnesium when blood pressure is elevated.



Four people have osteopenia:

1. Doctor recommended for her to simply take Citrical and Vitamin D. 

2. Her endocrinologist suggested one Calcium pill three times a day and Slo-Mag twice a day. Magnesium helps the Calcium to be absorbed better. Her bones have slowly improved per Dexa Scans, to the point she no longer has osteopenia. Gradual process over 5 years. Also exercises. She says it was all worth it. 

3. She takes Calcium Sandoz (in Germany) as her doctor ordered it. 600 mg Calcium and 400 IU Vitamin D. She also has a web site of the International Osteoporosis Foundation: www.1ofbonehealth.org/publications.html 

4. She just started taking Osteo-K as published scientific journal articles show the benefit of K2 for absorption. It has 1000 mg Calcium (citrate), 2000 IU Vitamin D3, and 45 mg Vitamin K2.



Two people said to get your Vitamin D level checked. 



Things to avoid:

1. One person taking Fosomax, but had to have two dental implants and the periodontist said, "Your jaw bone is not healing." She asked her if she was taking bisphosphanate type of medicine, since she has several patients with the same problem on that kind of medicine. She said, "Yes" since Fosomax is a bisphosphanate. This medicine stays in your body practically forever and ironically the periodontist said it keeps your bones from healing! Now she takes Miacalcin (a Nasal Spray made from salmon bones). Her last bone density test (BDT) showed improvement.

2. Some say to avoid the other bisphosphonates, such as Boniva and Actonel, as well because of harmful side effects; try to manage osteoporosis and osteopenia with natural vitamins, minerals, and exercise instead. Talk to your doctor if you have concerns.
