The easiest way to create headings in Word is to highlight the text that is 
to become a heading, then press alt+ctrl+1 for Heading Level 1, alt+ctrl+2 
for Heading Level 2, etc., through alt+ctrl+6 for a heading at Level 6.

Once these headings are in your document, word can use them to build or 
update the table of contents. It's really easy to do, but it's one of those 
things I have to relearn each time because I don't do it often enough to 
remember.
