The easiest way to create headings in Word is to highlight the text that is to become a heading, then press alt+ctrl+1 for Heading Level 1, alt+ctrl+2 for Heading Level 2, etc., through alt+ctrl+6 for a heading at Level 6. Once these headings are in your document, word can use them to build or update the table of contents.
