I just confirmed that this also works in Word 2010.

What matters here is the version of Word.

In Word 2013, you find a synonym by arrowing to the word in an open document, pressing the applications key, hitting the letter Y or down-arrowing to and pressing enter on Synonyms. At this point, you just down-arrow through the list of suggestions and press enter on the one you want.

I don't remember whether Word 2010 does the same thing or not.

In earlier versions of Word, you need to press the applications key, press enter on Synonyms, press F6 to go into the Research pain. After that, I don't remember. Well, I remember tabbing, swearing, and muddling around for a while to figure it out each time.
