Well, I don't really know for sure.

To be honest, I don't have the time or inclination to set up an empty
"device=" statement (or a statement that has one or more spaces after the
equal sign) and explore the consequences.  I ASSUME that windows would
PROBABLY ignore it, but there is a slight possibility that it may try to
execute (especially if there are spaces) the command.  Which COULD result
in the error Ian has reported.

But as I said in my original message..... it was a wild guess.
