I have seen a CD drive disappear on my computer and I ended up fixing it
by adding a Promise IDE Controller card and using that for my IDE
devices.

It turned out to be a blessing in disguise because I did some
benchmarking and my hard disk to hard disk file moves were much faster.
It had been taking 3 to 4 minutes to copy a 700Meg file and after I
moved to the IDE controller card the same file copied in less than 1 1/2
minutes.
