It certainly sounds like the portable cd writer is still lurking on the port
for some reason.  It's not the port hardware if dos printing works.  The
icon greys out when the printer driver goes off-line.  You should be able to
right-click on the printer icon and uncheck off-line, then go into printer,
properties and change the spooler to 'print directly to printer', its the
only thing I can think to try before wiping the notebook windows folder to
get rid of the cd writer drivers. Dos supports LPT1, LPT2, or LPT3.  In
cmos, you didn't change the port address, did you?

IBM Thinkpad 1400 i-series with win98 (first edition) OS. Prints OK from
DOS window. However, cannot print (even to file) from windows.

Re-installing windows (98 upgrade CD) on top did not make any difference.

Sometime ago the laptop was infected by AOL trojan. Also, the parallel
port had been used for a portable CD Writer. Would that be harmful for a
laptop parallel port ?
