As I said, I don't use auto-protection, but I do care about protection. So you
may take my step:
1) disable Java in your mail client (eg, outlook express, outlook,...), some
viruses can attack in that way.
2) Do NOT open any attachment that you don't know who sent it, or come from
un-trusted place (eg from university network), you should save them out, and
scan for viruses first.
3) do a daily check on browser security update, especially if you use IE, pay
attention on MS press and other security advise, IE has more holes than you
think of.
4) Disable cookies (enable only you need to), Netscape has a hole if you enable
both java and cookies.
5) Update your viruses definition daily.
