Joel,

I think John is on the wrong track. Muting the speaker will
cause the sound to be turned off, but would not cause an error
message of any type, especially a message stating that
"... no DEVICE is available..."

This kind of error message is typically due to a resource
conflict and/or a wrong setting for the sound card drivers
in one (or both) of the DOS files CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT

Since you have confirmed that it is not a resource conflict,
then it must be a wrong setting for the DOS level device driver.
I suggest you get out the manual for the sound card and
look up and confirm each of the "switches" and parameters that
are being used in the config and autoexec statements.
