You need to identify the hardware:
This utility will tell you which ethernet controller you have (As well
as other hardware):

You probably need the Via 4 in 1 package as well.
The aflash utility will install the BIOS update (If you need it-check first)
I see this patch as well, but I've never heard of it:
"Microsoft KB817900 USB fail to enter S3 patch file for Windows XP "
What OS are you installing?
It's hard to do any harm-wrong drivers just won't install.
Follow the directions for the BIOS Flash very carefully.
