CAN SOME ONE FROM THE LIST HELP ME GET  OUT OF THIS PROBLEM

I clean installed Win98SE on my Pentium MMX200 machine.After installation each time I start OE5, it asks <would you like OE5 to be your default mail client> I am answering YES each time, however, in the OE main manu when I open TOOLS>OPTIONS>DEFAULT MESSAGING ROGRAM, it still says OE5 is not your default messaging programme. I press the DEFAULT button next to it to make OE5 as the DEFAULT messaging program and say APPLY>OK. However, when I open TOOLS>OPTIONS> again the satus does not change. Even under  IE5 TOOLS>INTRNET OPTIONS >PROGRAM ,the E-MAIL PROGRAM is blank. As a result of this if I click on any e-mail address while browsing I get a message <CAN NOT PERFORM THIS OPERATION SINCE YOUR DEFAULT MAIL CLIENT IS NOT PROPERLY CONFIGURED REINSTALLING MAY HELP>
