  Is there any chance that the drive on your 386 is a 720KB drive
rather than 1.44MB?  Even though both drives should be able to read a
720KB disk, such a drive may format it with signals stronger than a
1.44MB drive is designed to format over.  [As I recall, IBM's advice
was that 3.5" floppies should only ever be formatted one way or the
other -- you should never try to reformat to the other density.]
