  Regarding hard drive that worked and now does not.

One more idea:  make sure jumpers are correct in the context of the drive's
use.  If I remember correctly, WD has a default drive as master setting that
is more forgiving than Seagate when there is or isn't a slave present.

Western Digital's web site can also provide you with jumper settings if your
drive isn't diagrammed on the case.
