One thought that enters my mind is that your little "eraser" program was a
Trojan horse. Did your program bug you with ads all the time (buy me or buy
this other thing), or did you notice any other glitches? Are you running
current antivirus and antispyware software, and have you scanned your
machine recently? The other likely culprit in my mind is registry corruption
from your "eraser," legit program or not. Cleaning your tracks sometimes
involves diving into the registry to scrub out stuff, but that should be
done very carefully. It is just as easy to delete something vital as it is
to purge something trivial. You may need to roll back your machine to a
restore point prior to installing your "eraser," if this is registry
corruption. If it's a virus or spyware issue, using System Restore is not a
good solution as bugs tend to hide inside your restore points. Worst comes
to worst, you can always wipe and reload the OS, but that's fairly extreme.
Try to save the system first using System Restore, virus scrubbing, and
other tactics.
