Well, I *thought* I found the answer after doing some research, but alas,
no. It turns out that there is a default limit of 400 folder's settings that
XP can remember. Once XP "remembers" 400 folder settings, it can't remember
anymore so every folder reverts to the last used settings, or so I
understand.

There are registry tweaks out there that allow you to up that limit. To
change the limit to 1000 folders for example, add the following to the
registry:
 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]
"BagMRU Size"=dword:000003e8
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam]
"BagMRU Size"=dword:000003e8
Having said that, this tweak has worked for others, but alas it did NOT help
me.... Maybe it will help you.

The irony is that I have 4 users on my machine - the other users do not have
this problem, so somewhere along the line I have changed a critical setting
somewhere in my own setup....

Unfortunately I don't have a solution to this problem since it has been
haunting me as well. It appears that Windows XP has a problem in doing what
it is supposed to be able to do - remember folder settings. In particular,
my Control Panel keeps coming up as detail view rather than icons that I
keep setting it to. Sometimes it remembers through a reboot, but then it
goes back to detail view again. It does appear to be a configuration problem
because not all of my Win XP Pro installations have this problem. I have 4
computers that have XP on them and the worst problem is on my own machine.
But then, my machine has the most applications and special drivers
installed. If you do find an answer, many people will want to hear about the
fix!
