Hello all,

After answering Brad privately, I thought that this information might be
of general interest, so I will put in my two bits here:

Adding a short "tail" to the external adapter by placing the second SCSI
connector on the host adapter is the standard and recommended way of
attaching a "sideboard" connecter to a mainboard with built-in SCSI chip
(IWill, Intel, ASUS with Adaptec 7880, etc.).This will also work on an
adapter card, although I don't know why one would want to do it since an
external adapter is on the slot fastener anyway...

The cable can run from the external adapter to the host adapter, then on
to no more than 6 internal devices, obviously. The "tail" must be no
shorter than 2" and no longer than 8" according to Adaptec. If an
external device is attached, host adapter termination must be removed.

On a UW host adapter there are limitations to whether or not you can use
certain portions of the bus, i.e. if you have an external device on the
"sideboard," an internal HD on the UW bus you are not supposed to use
the internal end of the 50-pin cable (for instance for a CD-ROM).
Adaptec says this is forbidden, but I get away with it regularly and
don't seem to have any problems. Your mileage may vary.

Hope this is of some use to someone.

Respectfully,

Bruce
