Are these paleo-anthropologists aware that such stuff can be used to bait
animals?

In my area people buy enormous bags of apples and carrots. The reason is
that they use them to bait deer. When the deer come to the bait, they are
taken for food.
In Texas, corn/maize is used for deer bait.

Seeds of various kinds could have been used similarly, depending on what
kind of animal was desired.
