Fish farmers are limited by the amount of water available to fish farms in a given year. If there is a dry year, commercial food production usually must make due with less water, which means less fish.

Farmed Atlantic salmon is considered depleted because in some areas the supply of water is so tight that fisheries are collapsing, and those that aren't are claiming water at the expense of other fish species.
