Drug stores sell little  packages of pills that contain carnauba wax.  They
soften things up so not so much damage is done.

At health food stores, or sometimes groceries, you can buy ground-up flax
seeds.  If you are not used to them, you must begin using a VERY SMALL
quantity -- 1/4 teaspoon on your cereal or salad, working up slowly to
maybe a half tablespoon over time.  They really liven things up.  They also
provide some hard-to-get linoleic and lenolenic fatty acids.
