The U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA)
needs your guidance to help improve outcomes of police encounters with
people with mental illnesses. Communities across the country are
implementing crisis intervention teams (CITs), police-mental health
teams, and other types of
collaborative programs. Many of these communities want reliable
information on the essential elements that comprise promising
programs, and how these elements can be successfully implemented. To
address this need, BJA has partnered with the Council of State
Governments' Criminal Justice/Mental Health Consensus Project and the
Police Executive Research Forum (PERF). The Consensus Project and PERF
have developed a document that identifies and describes ten essential
elements of any specialized police-based program. This document now
needs the review of specialists like you.
