Taiwanese Ambassador to The Gambia Richard Shih Tuesday met with President
Yahya Jammeh at State House, where he presented to the Gambian leader a
pineapple fruit from the first harvest of a pilot project to grow pineapples
in the country.

Ambassador Shih told waiting reporters, shortly after his audience with
President Jammeh, that the project is the vision of the Gambian leader to
see if pineapples could be grown in The Gambia.

Ambassador Shih expressed gratitude to NARI, Ministry of Agriculture and the
Taiwanese Technical Mission team in the country for their support in the
pineapple pilot project.

“We are closely partnering with other Gambian development partners to
continue developing this pineapple project, and our main intention is to
replicate this pineapple project in other parts of the country in the near
future,” Ambassador Shih added.

According to the ROC ambassador, they conducted a sensitization campaign for
the farmers in Banjulinding and the surrounding villages about the pineapple
project, adding that the total growth period of pineapples is about 14
months.
