Elder Hous,

Here is a lesson that I recently learnt from our resident teacher, Baba. I would look at the language of command. In this case, Buukee spoke in Wollof. In as much as I am afraid to say, I fear that Buukee is a Serer. I heard krubally and Omar Joof pointing fingers to the Badibunkas and Jolas respectively.

Best,
YJ

Did you say that was Badibou ? Wolf is the most dorminant character in our folk tales. How about when wolf was yawning and was asked if he hungry or thirsty or sleepy ? He answer was " I slept near the well" . Which means he was neither thirty nor sleepy thus was hungry Hous

Weekend’s Humor: Buukee’s Funeral Get-together

By Yero Jallow

*Buukee –Wollof term for wolf.

Buukee had a funeral. It was Buukee’s mother that died this
time around. While the smaller animals jubilated over the passing of their
predator, Buukee wept nonstop in crocodile tears. It was an opportunity for him
to have all the fat goats to himself. “All the fat goats will be mine. Deny the
fact who can?” he would cry.

Buukee organized the mother’s funeral get-together and invited
neighbors. He sacrificed the fattest of the goats and brought the meat before
the gathering. At first, the visiting neighbors too expected some share of the
meat as is the norm but suspicious of Buukee’s nature. Soon Buukee would hatch
a plan. Buukee divided the meat into three portions. He said:“Bee-pur buukee”
(The first portion belongs to Buukee);“Bee-pur kuu yaayam dei” (The second portion
belongs to the one that lost the mother);“Bee-kuu jehkah gheeroh” (The third
portion belongs to the one that first lay hands on it.” Before Buukee completed
his last statement, he already had his hands on the third portion.

Oh, well…the first share goes to Buukee. The second share
goes to the one that lost the mother and that is none but Buukee again. The
third share goes to the first to lay hands on it and Buukee already had his
fingers on it.

The others animals held their mouths in amusement again and
with sealed lips, left the scene of the get-together without complaining for
fear of being Buukee’s next victims.
