Ousman, I agree. All sorts are packaged as serious news and this one is clearly an example among many. This guy has figured out that the more ridiculous he gets, the more they carry his crazy mind. I have not seen his type in a long while. Reading about his opinion of himself, I kept asking myself, how does one get so absorbed with their image to such an unhealthy state? How does this become normal daily operation for a person? Going back to your point, why is such narcissism news? I guess one can say, if they did not carry it we would not have read it much less discuss it. To that I say I can do without such crank.

The big elephant in the room is the online media. Their tendency to publish any article from any crackpot with half-baked ideas without any editorial due diligence is the root cause of most of this juvenile pranks that surface on online Gambian newspapers all the time. Filling up web pages with whatever conspiracy or gossip someone can dream off is not the hallmark of good journalism. If we are fighting a dictatorship, we need to set some standards of what is acceptable. We need to better than the guys we are trying to uproot. The editors note at the end of that Sankanu defense article is kind of sad. I failed to see how you catergorized that piece of innuendo as whistle blowing. Thanks for the forward. On initial reading, it seems to me that Sankanu himself is the whistle-blower here. I cannot believe that he is still hanging around the Gambia and GRTS trying to get a job by impressing the dictator. I also think Lamin Manga is acting on higher authority though Sankanu can be right. The interesting thing is almost 6 months after his auditioning of Gambians, Sankanu seems nowhere near filming or at least preparing to start filming his movie.

Dear Maafanta Editor, I read with keen interest the section of Sankanu’s sad article on his loss in which he requested the people contacting him to ask the Director General (DG) of GRTS why his Interview with Malick Jones is not on air. Sankanu wrote that he promised to not write an article on it. He is denying the Gambian public the right to know. GRTS is a public institution paid for by the taxpayers. It is subject under public accountability through the parliament and court of public opinion. Transparency, accountability and probity are among the principles of the APRC Government, I think. Whatever right and wrong work that takes place at GRTS must be in the public domain.
I am not a trained journalist. I sought the support of an Editor with one of the local papers to write my whistle-blowing report for your readers in journalistic style. I will be very pleased if you kindly grant me space. Other newspapers can reproduce this report from you when they like.
I am member of GRTS Senior Management Team and I was seeing Prince Sankanu waiting in vain within GRTS complex for the past three months. At times I asked if he’s appointed a watchman. I was told he is following up on his TV programme proposals and interview appearances. One day I came to greet him. When he narrated his predicaments and how his time is wasted, I said that is not fair. They should tell him something serious. I started my own private investigations inside GRTS and countrywide to know the truth.
Sankanu's film project on rape “The Woman In A Black Jacket” is not the only project he is executing in Gambia. Editor, your readers and the Gambian taxpayers should also note that Sankanu presented high class TV programme proposals in January 2013 that will generate revenue for GRTS but the Director General (DG) Lamin Manga is not willing to approve even the pilot editions. He is worried that Sankanu with his persona, intellect, knowledge, charm and large fan base will overshadow him. I saw Sankanu’s great proposals with the new GRTS Director of TV Programmes, Ardy Fatty. He studied it with the new Deputy Director General Abdou MK Touray and advised the DG to give them a try. They are very relevant, profitable and professional but Lamin Manga is not willing to act.
Now that the whistleblower has exposed this, Lamin Manga and his lieutenants will fight to supress Sankanu’s TV proposals and his Malick Jones interview at the loss of the taxpayers. They would do whatever it takes to frustrate him out of the Gambia. They are afraid that Sankanu is a naturally born talent and gifted genius who could be assigned in due course the task of transforming GRTS into The Gambia’s Al-Jazeera when he gets the full backing of the President of The Republic. Sankanu is said to not be interested in full time government job for now. A source from State House said some people are deliberately keeping Sankanu’s main file away from the attention of The President for approval and action.
Sankanu’s other GRTS proposal is one of the many issues idling on Lamin Manga’s desk. There are many pending issues that Lamin Manga is unwilling to act on. This is costing GRTS a lot of money and viewers. The man is not capable of making decisions. Money and power have made Lamin Manga dull. The position of Director General is too much for him but he is unwilling to admit that. Staff morale at the TV is very low. We get our salaries very late in the month.Gambians watch the TV channels from Senegal and Dubai more than GRTS. Lamin Manga boasts that he has strong backers in the Office of The President that would close their eyes on his incompetence. He comes to work whenever he likes. He is one of many officers who feel that they have natural entitlements to public positions and would not hesitate to frustrate anyone they see as threat. Wherever you go in this
world, public office occupation is limited and not permanent.
Editor, Lamin Manga is not happy about what Sankanu wrote in his Kanilai experience that he Lamin Manga disappeared from him unnoticed. This is the truth. I was there as part of GRTS crew. We were all sitting at Sindola Lodge when Sankanu surprised us by appearing. We all thought he went back to Germany. He is keeping a very low profile in the country. Sankanu wrote on what he observed about people’s behaviour at Kanilai but Lamin Manga saw the lines on his behaviour wrongly. He was going around trying to discredit Sankanu and looking for ways to teach him a lesson. The interview with Malick Jones is an opportunity he will not miss. He was informed well in advance on plans to interview Sankanu. He pretended later that he was not informed. When the former Programming Manager tried to air the Sankanu interview, Lamin Manga refused to clear it. He is
indirectly sending a message to Sankanu that he has the power and the backing of the higher authorities to waste his time and nothing will come out of it. Sankanu has no means of getting redress. Truth and justice are dead in The Gambia.
Malick Jones also dragged his feet on interviewing Sankanu based on the misinformation and prejudice he was overfed against the young man. When he finally got the courage to invite Sankanu, he was awed and blown away by Sankanu’s brilliance, plans for The Gambia’s film industry and his interesting personality that he regretted wasting Sankanu’s time. Malick Jones’ personal differences with Lamin Manga is also affecting Sankanu. Malick was once made Director General and then demoted to the Deputy of Lamin Manga till he was promoted again as Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Information and Communication Infrastructure (MOICI). Lamin wants to stop Malick Jones’ Interview programme but he is worried that Malick could use his position at the supervisory Ministry to fight. Malick Jones is also worried that Lamin Manga could use his closeness to State House to put him into trouble whe he defend Sankanu’s interview for broadcast. The two
men are feeling too big to talk to each other.
The high-profile Sankanu interview is now used by the two men to test their power and ego. The Sankanu interview was edited by a trusted GRTS editor and vetted by the Deputy Director General(DDG) for broadcast but DG Lamin Manga is still insisting on watching the Sankanu interview first. There are over 10 programmes on GRTS Lamin never insist on personally watching the new tapes of each of them before they are scheduled. Normally once the DDG and Director of TV Programmes advise him, he just gives his approval and gets copy of the programme schedule for his files but with the Sankanu interview, he is playing God. With the way he runs away from his GRTS duties it will take donkey years before he finds time to preview that Sankanu interview or dream of clearing it.
Editor, in this country people like to deny their responsibilities. Some people could try to punish and fight Sankanu for my whistle-blowing. I recruited the help of a friend within the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) and a technician of one of the mobile phone operators to intercept parts of Sankanu’s SMS exchanges with GRTS managers only. His privacy and exchanges with others were not touched. As said above, I am not a journalist. I hired the services of an Editor with one of the local newspapers to filter the SMS transcript and re-write this report for media use.
Below is a selection of the SMS exchanges between Prince Bubacarr Aminata Sankanu, Lamin Manga, Abdou MK Touray, Malik Jones and Ardy Fatty. I am ready present the SMS transcripts to court when Lamin Manga and his backers try to deny them. The following SMS can be extracted from Lamin Manga own’s GAMCEL line and be posted on the web for the whole world to judge. Anyone with access to the right technology can do it. The public officers will be humiliating themselves when they insist on punishing Sankanu for this. Any good hacker can reconstrcut the SMS data even when deleted. They are public officers and servants. If they are not ready to face public scrutiny and accountability, they should stop wasting taxpayers’ monies that will make the public hate the government eventually:

Editor, I understand Sankanu is ill and bed-ridden and too weak to fight for his rights. The people who would like to take advantage of him now should know the Almighty God is not sleeping and just will come for them. I wish Sankanu speedy recovery. I would not even wish my worse enemies to go through what Sankanu is experiencing in the hands of greedy, squared-pegged and jealous officials here in The Gambia.
Lastly, Lamin Manga should be informed that the respect he once commanded among the Sarahullehs who used to fondly called him “o kallu” (our inlaw) when he married a Sarahulleh lady is waning. The mouth-to-mouth news on the way he has been abusing Prince Bubacarr Aminata Sankanu has disappointed them. The Sarahullehs with their internal heterogeneous directions are known for backing and supporting one another, particularly, in the face of adversity and external aggression. You do wrong to one of them, you touch the whole community.
Sankanu was recently appointed Ambassador of Sarahulleh Youth Development. He is a formidable force, beacon of hope intellectual icon for many Sarahullehs. Playing with him is not a wise thing to do. When the Basse National Assembly member Muhammed Magassy wanted to work with APRC, they fought him until the wealthy Sarahulleh youths got angry and funded his legitimate independence candidacy against lies and dirty tricks of the tribalist sycophants in the President Jammeh’s entourage.
The Jammeh Government should not repeat the same humiliating mistake. Sankanu is well known for expressing his interest in cooperating with the Government in building a viable Gambia film and TV industry but they are playing with him like in the Muhammed Maggassi case. Sankanu’s words have weight in the wealthy Sarahulleh community when you ask the members of the prominent Dynamic Sarahulleh Association For Changes and Development (DSACD) and the Sarahulleh Youth Development Organization (SYDO).
Sankanu said he is not interested politics. I think he has the right to change his mind when the fight against him continues. His entry into politics with funding from very rich campaign donours will make the last Basse parliamentary election look like elementaray school exercise for political change. He has the clout and audacity to mobilize the Sarahullehs to, for instance, withdraw their monies from the banks and the country’s economy. This could have devastating effects on our cost of living. From my source in the Sarahulleh Community, though a number of influential Sarahullehs are angry and disappointed in the way Sankanu is marginalized and wasted by GRTS and other officials and institutions, they still strongly back the Jammeh Government as there is no evidence that
Sankanu’s predicaments are dictated by President Yahya Jammeh. They are close watching the way Sankanu is faring with his projects and proposal.
