Wade To Be Inaugurated On Saturday At Stadium

Wade To Be Inaugurated On Saturday At Stadium
March 30, 2000

DAKAR, Senegal (PANA) - Senegal's president-elect, Abdoulaye Wade, will be sworn-in at a stadium Saturday, witnessed by fellow leaders from the sub-region and thousands of spectators, press reports said Wednesday.

The leaders of Gambia, Mali, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, Cote d'Ivoire and Gabon are expected to attend the ceremony.

Senegal's first two presidents, Leopold Sedar Senghor and Abdou Diouf, took their oaths of office in parliament, but Wade has chosen to be sworn-in at the 50,000-seat stadium, in a suburb of Dakar, named after Senghor.

This innovation stems from the wish of Wade's party, the Senegalese Democratic Party, to give a popular dimension to the event, which will be followed by a live music show by the country's prolific musicians.

Wade will be sworn-in by Youssou Ndiaye, president of the Constitutional Council.

In keeping with the secular character of Senegal, the Koran or the Bible will not be used in the swearing-in ceremony.
