Senegal urged to intervene in Gambia's 'worsening' rights record

News - Africa news

The global rights watchdog, Amnesty International (AI), has called on the Senegalese government to intervene and engage its neighbours, Gambian, with a view to improving the latter's "worsening" human rights record, PANA reported Thursday.

The call was contained in a communique issued by AI Senegal office in Dakar, as the Gambian government faces the United Nations Human Rights body in Geneva, Switzerland, to review its 'periodic report' on the situation of human rights in the country.

"On the occasion of the review conducted by the United Nations, Senegal has a major role to play in improving the human rights situation in The Gambia,' Mr. Seydi Gassama, AI Director in Senegal, remarked.

"Senegal must ask the Gambian government to initiate independent investigations into allegations of torture, ill-treatment and ensure that perpetrators of such abuses are brought to justice," Gassama stressed.

AI also argued that Senegal should help in ensuring that the Gambian government compensated all such victims of rights violation.

"The Gambian government continues its policy of repression, undermining the rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly. Senegal must seize the opportunity given to it and ask the Gambian government to investigate all allegations of enforced disappearances and to ensure that justice is rendered.' Gassama said.

AI further alleged that the human rights situation in Gambia worsened after an attempted coup was foiled in March 2006.

According to the communique, 'AI has evidence that journalists, opposition politicians and their supporters are victims of enforced disappearances in the Gambia.'

The global rights watchdog has further submitted a report to the United Nations Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva to highlight the worsening human rights situation in the Gambia.
