The  Captive Mind

Nailed to a plank 
Of concrete steel 
The captive mind 
Sees change 
But cannot change  
Sees good 
But cannot say it's good 
Prefers to bear the pain 
Of eternal impalement  
To a red hot plank 
Of concrete steel. 
Cuffed to a bleeding knot 
The captive mind 
Feels light 
But insists it’s only the dark 
It sees the heights 
But insists all is down below 
That liberty lies 
And freedom resides 
Deep down the blind airless dungeons 
Of spiritual and mental slavery. 
Glued to hero worship 
The captive mind  
Gloats over the deadly blows 
It deals the truth 
It brags over  
The slain corpse of decency 
Decomposing at the public forum 
It loudly trumpets its right to love 
It’s eternal right to worship 
That vicious little hero of its jaundiced fancy! 
Groaning under the weight 
Of a burdened conscience 
The captive mind  
Cracks out 
In thunderous laughter 
At the glory of its own slavery 
It rattles out 
Eulogies to the brute 
Dark Beelzebub 
And dares feeble reason to show its ugly face! 
Baking over the blazing furnace 
Of willful lies  
And unjust hailing of the unjust 
The captive mind shouts 
Loudly shouts out 
Its freedom to lie the master lie 
It trumpets to the world 
It’s freedom to slowly die the master die 
Locked up in the raging inferno 
Of self-deceit!
