Uncle, Seedia has within the Wuli West Fund a disaster relief program. The fund has been assisting victims of natural disasters since it's inception in 1997.

I don't political parties need to have such units due to the fact that they are not meant for that. This is arguable though. Seedia has provided his contacts, so any that wishes to know further can contact him directly.

Thank you for your concern

Nyang

Thanx Dad for sharing this news of Flash floods in Wulli. We share our grief with the victims of this flood.

I was under the impression the vice president Njie Saidy is in charge of Gambia's disaster management division??? I remmembered shortly after the Catholic Relief Services assisted in the past flood, the government wanted to ride on the organisation's generousity to roll out a long-overdue disaster management program. Now we know that was perhaps for show. If there was any GRTS coverage of this flood disaster Modou, can you share it with us? I am sure more areas than Wulli were affected.

Does PDOIS have a disaster-relief unit within the party so that it can substitute for a national disaster management devision? Because this government is too delinquent to leave disaster management in their hands. They're liable to cause more disasters themselves. I encourage Hon Sidia to consider setting up such a unit within PDOIS and for other parties such as NRP, UDP and GMC to set up similar units and have these units organise and coordinate such humanitarian relief efforts for Gambia's destituted. If you and the other officials of other parties can consider this and share their work product with us here, it will be extremely valuable.

I encourage our coleagues and friends to assist the people of Wulli who cry out for assistance. I also encourage all relief agencies to channel their assistance through these opposition party units rather than through a delinquent government. If they continue to associate with this government they will be amplifying the suffering of Gambians and be complicit in government crimes.

Haruna.

WULI WEST MP BRIEFS PRESS ON WULI DISASTERS APPEALS FOR SUPPORT

By Mamadou Dem

The National Assembly Member for Wuli West, in a press conference held on Thursday 26th of August at the People’s Center in Churchill’s town, briefs the press on the disasters which occurred in Wuli and URR in general.

The Wuli West Member of Parliament said that the main purpose of the press conference is to inform the press on the recent disasters caused by heavy down pours of rain resulting in the destruction of several buildings in Sutukonding, Sutukoba and environs.

He added that the recent flood caused huge destruction to properties such as buildings, food stuffs, fences, clothing, household utensils, farm land and even livestock.

He said it is in this regard that he would commence a programme to assist those that are affected in the said place particularly those who were victims of the flood of the 31 of July 2010. He said the destruction affects a total of twenty seven compounds in Sutukonding alone together with livestock and seedlings that were all washed away by the flood.

He said the destruction is especially severe in Sutukoba in the Wuli East where 8 horses and many ruminants have been washed away. He said this shows the magnitude of the floods.

Honourable Jatta further explains that he has been suggesting to the government department responsible on several occasions in the National Assembly both during question time and adjournment debates, to put a fire station in the North Bank of URR to serve that part of the region where fire disasters often occur but nothing has been done to date. Jatta opined that a fire station in Basse cannot serve that purpose because of the need for ferry crossing especially at odd hours.

He said the information he has is that much rainfall is expected in the URR and the KMC this year. He informed the press that even last Wednesday, the area experienced 5 hours of rain fall and if the trend continues, more disasters can be expected.

The Wuli West Member of Parliament indicated that it is necessary for him being the National Assembly Member for Wuli West constituency to inform the press as well as launch an appeal on behalf of the victims. He calls on government to intensify plans to assist the people that are being affected by these disasters.

When asked how he hopes to achieve this objective; Sidia said the first thing is to appeal nationally and internationally so as to raise funds and other necessary items required to help the victims. He however said what is needed to ultimately solve the problem is to put up a viable structure in place which will have branches in every region and even in communities to share information and expertise and to sensitise people on erosion and topography as well as address issues regarding disasters.

Sidia could be reached on the following contact numbers; 9947444/6534532 or 4393177.
