Wade May Get Over 60 Percent In Final Tally

DAKAR, Senegal (PANA) - In Sunday's run-off presidential election, Senegalese opposition candidate Abdoulaye Wade convincingly beat his rival, incumbent President Abdou Diouf, by a wide margin, according to provisional results published in the press Tuesday.

The figures show that Wade has led in 22 of the country's 31 districts, with analysts predicting he would get 60 percent of the total 1,616,307 cast votes.

Diouf conceded defeat Monday by congratulating Wade as soon as the first results Sunday night showed the latter leading in most of the districts.

According to the Sud Quotidien, a daily, the two statesmen will be working together towards a speedy handing-over schedule.

Wade was quoted as saying he wanted to form a government ahead of the EU-OAU Summit slated for 3-4 April in Cairo.

He will be Senegal's third president after Leopold Sedar Senghor, who resigned in 1980 and handed power to Diouf.
