Guinea Bissau Inaugurates New Assembly
Guinea Bissau Inaugurates New Assembly
January 28, 2000
BISSAU, Guinea Bissau (PANA) - Georges Malu, a member of parliament from President-elect Kumba Yala's Social Renovation Party, was Friday elected speaker of the Guinea Bissau National Assembly.
The 102 legislators took part in the inaugural session of the new house where eight parties are represented.
Yala's party has a majority of 38 seats, followed by the Resistance of Guinea Bissau with 29, and the former ruling Party for the Independence of Guinea-Bissau with 24.
In a short statement, Malu urged the "forces of the nation" to join efforts with the majority party for the development of the country.
Helder Vaz, elected deputy speaker, called for the immediate dissolution of the military junta, led by Gen. Ansumane Mane.
Set up following the mutiny of June 1998, the junta was maintained under an agreement signed in July of the same year in Lome, Togo, for a peaceful settlement of the Guinea Bissau's political crisis.
