Here is my original question: If you follow a gf diet, is it possible to eventually stop the thyroid antibodies from Hashimoto's Disease and eventually stop taking thyroid medication?
Summary: Out of 22 replies, it was unanimous, most people felt that once the damage is done to the thyroid then it will never recover full function which means that you must stay on medication for life. Here are some replies with additional information... Thank you for sharing your experience. Michelle

Unfortunately, no, if you have been on thyroid medication for any considerable amount of time. When you take the medication, your body never triggers your (already less than fully functional) thyroid to produce the hormones it is supposed to - as a result, it stops functioning entirely and essentially withers away and cannot start again.

I think being gf does lower your antibodies, but it depends on how much of your thyroid got destroyed as to whether you can go off armour thyroid.

I don't know but I still have to take thyroid meds 8 years after going GF. I think it is just another autoimmune disorder that is concurrent with celiac rather than caused by it

I have been able to reduce my synthroid from 125mcg to 88mcg but I am not just GF. I follow a paleo/primal diet and eat no grains or legumes or sugar or other starchy food.

I have Hashimoto's and Graves Disease, but they are now in remission. When my thyroid was in abnormal ranges and on a gluten-free diet it did not help me at all.
