Subject: Lowes Update

Grace,

When I was grocery shopping at Lowes on Robinhood Rd. on SAturday I had the opportunity to ask the manager how he was coming with getting the gluten free ready for us. He told me that he and some buyers for the Natural Food Area attended a Natural Foods Expo in DC last weekend. He said they were amazed at how many gluten free foods are "out there". I said " yes, and we would like to have them here in our area as well". He said they were able to sample some of these foods and discovered the foods are actually quite tasty, so consequently Lowes will not only be adding g/f foods but expanding it beyond what they had originally planned. I again gave him the statistics of 1:133 people have this disease and don't know it yet so the customer base is more than there. I also reminded him that any of us from our gluten intolerance group would be glad to meet with the folks from Lowes and share ideas and thoughts on foods we would like to see here.

Also, while I was in the produce area I encountered Rep. Richard Burr and could briefly speak to him about our food labeling issues. He explained what he is trying to accomplish is a nationwide uniform labeling bill. Right now the states have all different requirements which make it difficult for the manufacturers to put everything on the label. He feels with a uniform code for all states would then encourage the manufactures to add the allergen information.

As you can tell I had a good time at Lowes on Saturday morning- made it worth hitting the store early!!

Martha
