Several people responded to my request for information on GF
evening primrose oil, some even offering to send me specific brands if
I could not find them in New York City. I thank everybody who
responded so quickly and generously with information.
Evening primrose seems to be popular with those who take it. One
woman wrote that it had done wonders for her allergies; another, whose
toddler twins have celiac, reported that ever since she started giving
them two 1300 mg softgels a day of evening primrose, on the advice of
her naturopath, she has noticed "a big difference, the skin is so soft
and smooth and no more rashes."
    As to GF brands:
    - Nature Made, evening primrose combined with vitamin E (for
better absoption). Comes in 500 mg strength. Available at Kmart.
    - Solaray's "Primrosa." Concentrated perlcaps of 1200 mg.
    - Costco's True Nature Evening Primrose Oil.
    - In Canada, the store brand at Pharma Plus.
    - Royal Brittany, by American Health.
    - Nature's Way Efamol, made in England.
    - Great Earth's Evening Primrose Oil. Comes in different
strengths. Their website is at www.greatearth.com.
    - Nature's Herbs, a division of Twin Labs. The company says that
all Nature's Herbs products are GF.
    - Solgar Softgels.
While most seemed to feel that a daily dose of 1000 to 1200 was
sufficient, a few reported taking more than twice that.
Evening primrose should be taken with vitamin E to improve
absorption, according to several people. Again, my thanks to
all.
