I got a recommendation through someone on the celiac list for a restaurant in Brooklyn, so I called the place. The owner/chef, Avrami, called me back last night. His mom (and I think sister) have celiac, and he runs the type of restaurant where just about everything is either gluten-free or can be made gluten-free. He is very knowledgeable about contamination and using separate pots and prep. He has desserts, soups, just about everything. But not meat or poultry. This is a dairy/vegetarian restaurant...and very, very kosher. Avrami said he also knows about diabetes and is very accommodating for customers with special diets.

The only downside is the parking in that area and traffic jams...are horrible. He is only four walking blocks from Maimonides Medical Center, where my mother has spent lots of time as a patient....and I couldn't eat anything other than my packs of tuna and nuts....While I hope Mom stays out of the hospital, at least I now know of a place I can eat.

Non-New Yorkers don't realize that the traffic patterns in different boroughs and even different neighborhoods do not make it conducive to take care of business (or pleasure) in one neck of the woods and dine in another, not if time is short. So unless Mom is in the hospital, this is really out of the way, but it is about 20 (give or take) minutes from the Verrazzano Bridge, where I arrive and depart, so I'm going to make an attempt to go here.

I'm thinking that once I get familiar with his menu, I can call ahead and maybe get take-out, while my husband drives in circles or double-parks.

I have yet to go here, but hope it works out, because Avrami sounds like he really knows what he's doing.
