Dear Celiac Listserv,
I went to an interesting conference this weekend on Celiac Disease and Gluten Intolerance. The conference was given by Dr. Thomas O'Bryan, DC,CCN, DABCN, from Libertyville, Illinois.
I would like to summarize an important point he made. Dr O'Bryan said that Gluten Intolerance and Celiac Disease are both serious conditions, both which lead to the breakdown of the Immune System. Just because you do not have the HLADQ 2 or 8 gene, does not mean that your body is not waging an immune attack on itself due to an intolerance to gluten. In short, the damage done to your immune system can be just as serious if you have gluten intolerance or celiac disease. The weakened immune system leads to other disease. The only remedy for either is a totally gluten free diet.
I found this very helpful and very affirming. Many of us have these genes, but for those who do not, please do not think for a minute that if you have anti-bodies to gluten, but not these specific genes, that you are not having an immune disorder response that is serious.
His web site is www.drtobryan.meta-ehealth.com.
I realize this is his opinion, but he did seem to have good research to back up the conclusions he was making.
Hope this is helpful.
Thanks to all who have written to me with opinions, experience and suggestions. I will continue to share what my search reveals.
Denise
