A few questions arose on the mechanism of bloating in Irritable Bowel
Syndrome. It used to be thought that gas retention was the cause. A
study a short time ago looked at this and found the cause was
relaxation of the abdominal wall muscles. This was just one study.
The mechanism for this loss of muscular tone was not known.
Unfortunately, I cannot find the original reference to this study.

One of the most common misdiagnoses in celiac disease is Irritable
Bowel Syndrome. About 5% of IBS patients actually have celiac
disease.
