Hi everyone -
Sorry this summary is so late. Lots of responses and not enough time.
Nobody identified an acid reflux medicine that was GF and dairy
free. However, there were several mentioned that are known to be GF
or that people take successfully:
- Prilosec
- generic Prilosec (Apotex (Omeprazole), and Sandoz brands are
supposed to be GF; CVS brand is Mylan -- all their medications are
supposed to be GF)
- Prevacid
- generic Prevacid
- Kapidex (timed-release Prevacid)
- Protonix (generic Protonix is not guaranteed to be GF as they get
it from up to 10 sources all with different inactive ingredient binders)
- Zantac
- Ranitadine (generic Zantac)
(Please check with the manufacturer to make sure these are GF before
you try them - things change.)
Interestingly, different people seem to be able to tolerate different
medications and react adversely to others-- no consistent reports--
so finding a medication that works for you, you need to try one or
more for yourself.
Other suggestions:
- find a nutritionist to look for alternatives
- go on an alkalyzing diet (i.e. eat substantially more fruit and
vegetables than grains and meat) and use correct food combining.
- peeled cucumbers (sliced, of course)
- Knudsen Pineapple Coconut juice (or is that Coconut Pineapple?)
- probiotics - one person suggested Megaflora probiotics (dairy free)
- Don't eat within two hours of lying down
- Have an HCl test to see if you have insufficient stomach acid or
Hydrochlordia see http://bit.ly/DrMyhillHypochlorhydria or http://
bit.ly/8oVmH2
- ginger; one suggestion was tea made with sliced ginger in it
- if a pill bothers you, try taking it every other day to see if you
can get used to it
- alkaline water-- you can get a hydrogen stick for $80 in the US
and it raises the pH of your jug of water to the point it reduces the
acid reflux (after you drink the water.)
- might be allergic to other foods - have food allergy testing
- baking soda in water (one teaspoon at a time, can repeat it)
- get a note from your doctor saying that taking a particular drug
is a medical necessity and you can take no substitute
- Specific Carbohydrate diet (SCD) - see http://www.scdiet.org/ or
http://www.austinscdfriends.com
- Willis Valley unpasteurized sauerkraut
- seltzer to burp up gas in stomach
- raw coconut milk and coconut meat blenderized with water
- If you need medicine daily, you have an underlying problem such as
bacteria overgrowth, inadequate stomach acid or something.
- Hearburn Prevention and Heartburn Stop by RenewLife (See
www.renewlife.com)
- Extra Strength Tums
- check library for this book: http://bit.ly/DrWrightStomachAcid
and *Digestive Wellness by Elizabeth Lipski, PhD, CCN
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I will check and see which
of the medications listed above are dairy free and will also look
into some of the other suggestions.
