The McDonald's Campaign

Several years ago, when Duncan Hines started adding malt back into their frosting, celiacs called and wrote and definitely made the company aware this addition was not a welcomed one. Lo and behold, Duncan Hines reverted back to their malt-free recipe. Hooray! They listened and responded.

Maybe now is the time to make yourself heard again... this time taking on McDonald's.

McDonald's food certainly isn't the most nutritious in the world. In fact, it is loaded with fats, sugar, and the amount of sodium is off the charts. Still, occasionally it would be convenient to drive through and order a hamburger.

Did you know that McDonald's offers gluten-free hamburger buns in parts of Sweden, Finland, and Norway? So the corporation has obviously experimented with gluten-free flours and has developed a bun that is palatable enough that they are willing to distribute it under the McDonald's name. Companies will often select a specific, limited area to test new products, and this may well be the case with the hamburger buns.

If there is a concerted effort on the part of celiacs in the U.S. to write, call, and otherwise express our opinion to the McDonald's corporation that there is definitely a customer base here in America for gluten-free hamburger buns, perhaps they will offer them here, too.

If you belong to a support group, perhaps you can print off some form letters for each member to mail. If you are part of an online celiac chat room, pass the word along. It's worth a try. Below is the contact information for McDonald's Headquarters:
