Subject: Re: Talking to kids about disabilities

Hi Cindy

I know how you feel. My grandfather has a hard time accepting the
disability
he has from having 2 hart attcks and lymphadema, and spinal stenosis...the
consequence being that he is always talking about disability in a derogatory
mannor. For instance one day we took my grandparents out to eat at a
restraunt and parked in the handicapped place as we always do when availible
becasue of the difficulty I have walking...well my grandfather proclaims in
a
loud voice--and rember I am in the car--"why are we parking here this space
is for cripples!" Now this comes after 18 (this happend 2 years ago) of
knowing me! Now I undersand that the reason he did this was because he
can't
accept disability and was brought up in a difrent era than I was but still
you would think he would learn by now.

He is constintly making remaks that we should abolish all welfare progrmas
because the people who are on them "all have 10 kids and are just using it
as
an excues to get off of doing work and to have more kids". This I find
offensive because I know that there are alot of peole who have disabilities
who either can not work or are on Food Stamps, SCI or other assistance. I
get SO MAD when he says stuff like this.

Yours,
Anee

I agree, it's bad enough from strangers, but when it comes from your own
family, it's more then I can bare. Lizzy and I have really just begun the
fight (she's 23 mo.) and already I am angry and tired!
