Hi Genia,
My father's parents came from Kishnev in Moldavia. His grandfather was an
orthodox Jew and was always in Shul, so the family nearly starved to death. So my
grandfather became a socialist and was arrested for passing out socialist
literature, was to be shot at dawn the next day. He talked his guard into
becoming a socialist and the two of them escaped hidden under a ton of coal in a
truck. They made it to the Austrian border where he found a rabbi whom he had
write a letter to send for his girlfriend do they could be married. Then they
came to the States.
