Excerpts from The New York Times (Sept. 5):

*Paralympic Athletes Add Equality to Their Goals*

By ALAN SCHWARZ

AURORA, Ill. - When he rolls to the starting line for the 1,500-meter
wheelchair race at the Paralympics, the Olympics for disabled athletes that
begin Saturday in Beijing, Tony Iniguez will wear his Team USA uniform with
pride. He will compete for the United States's Olympic program. He is also
suing it for discrimination...

Iniguez is one of many Paralympians who criticize the United States Olympic
Committee for providing less direct financial assistance and other benefits
at lower levels to Paralympic athletes than to Olympians in comparable
sports...

...The sprinter Kortney Clemons, one of many injured Iraq war veterans who
have become elite disabled athletes, agreed with Iniguez's frustration.

"I thought that when I was protecting this country, we had the best," said
Clemons, a former combat medic in Iraq who lost his right leg in an
explosion. "We do things right, we do things the best way. And just to know
that other countries can man up and support their Paralympic athletes, and
we're not, it's disappointing."

EXCERPTS from the New York Times (Sept. 7):

*Parents of Special-Needs Children Divided Over Palin's Promise to Help*

By JENNIFER STEINHAUER and AMY HARMON

...Ms. Palin's offer of friendship sparked hope in many parents, advocates
and lawyers as the often-marginalized subject of disabilities rights took
center stage. "We need one, that's for sure," wrote one blogger,
Rhymerchick, a Phoenix mother with an autistic child, adding, "I am tempted
to vote for them just because of that promise."

In animated debates in blogs, chat rooms and classrooms across America,
others wondered what such advocacy would entail. But the governor offered no
details, and Maria Comella, her spokeswoman, would not elaborate on what Ms.
Palin would seek to accomplish for disabled children as vice president...

...To those in Alaska who work with children with special needs, Ms. Palin's
pronouncement was surprising; the disabled have not been a centerpiece of
Ms. Palin's 20-months in office or any of her campaigns for office...

that enthusiasm is tempered with the skepticism born of years of broken
promises. "God love her for saying she's a friend for families, but I want
to know what that means," Martinez says. "There are a lot of 'friends' that
insist that they're the voice of the retarded. They're not my friends, and
they're not my son's voice, so I want to know whose voice she's supporting."

David Braddock, the executive director of the Coleman Institute for
Cognitive Disabilities at the University of Colorado, questions how Palin
will follow through on her promise. "These are words that are easy to say,
but apparently more challenging for some presidents to implement," he
says...

...As a result, many in the disability rights community are eager to hear
more about the GOP vice-presidential nominee's plans to follow up...

*Palin Raises Hopes for Parents of Kids with Disabilities*

Excerpts from the Associated Press (from USAToday.com) (Sept. 8):

[image: Associated Press logo]*Palin raises hope for parents of disabled
kids*

By Shannon Mccaffrey, Associated Press Writer

...In her address, [Palin] had a special message for families with
special-needs children: "I pledge to you that if we are elected, you will
have a friend and advocate in the White House."

It was an electrifying moment for those parents and their advocates...

...Palin did not say what her White House advocacy would mean.

During her few years as governor, she vetoed $275,000 for Alaska's Special
Olympics -- half the amount being sought. Money for a program that helps
rural school districts provide special education has remained flat. But she
supported another legislative proposal to boost spending for students with
special needs by some 175 percent in 2011.

Disability advocates said she hasn't been a strong voice for their cause --
at least not yet...

From The Wall Street Journal (Sept. 8):

*Palin's Pitch to Parents* *Of Disabled Raises Some Doubts*
*Support Is Pledged, But the GOP Ticket Seeks Spending Cuts*

By JUNE KRONHOLZ

Little Trig Palin prompted more than delegate coos when he joined his mother
on stage at the Republican convention. He also raised new questions among
parents whose children have disabilities.

Was Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin simply including her 5-month-old son, who has
Down syndrome, in a big family moment, or was she exploiting him in a tight
presidential campaign? Would he help break down social barriers facing
children with Down syndrome, or would those children now be drawn into the
right-to-life debate?

*Paralympic boon to China's disabled*

By Barbara Demick, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

BEIJING -- Never mind the prospect of a swimmer competing in the butterfly
who has only one leg, or a long jumper who is blind. To Zhou Rong, it was
miracle enough when she saw a television report showing a disabled person in
Beijing navigating a wheelchair onto a public bus.

"I was so happy," said Zhou, 29, who works in the southern city of Changsha
for the Hunan province Disabled Persons' Federation and uses a wheelchair.
"I'd never seen anything like that in my life."

From Dateline NBC (Aug. 29):

*Serbia's horrific institutions a relic of the past*
*Mentally disabled kids, adults given no hope for recovery, poor treatment*

By Ann Curry

BELGRADE, Serbia - A generation ago, mentally disabled people were often
quietly sent away to bleak government institutions, left to live out their
days on the isolated fringes of society.

But the scenes you are watching are not from that era, they're playing out
now, day after day, halfway across the world.

Children and adults given up by their families. Languishing behind crumbling
walls and rusted bars...

An unreasonable man (but my wife says that's redundant!)

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one
