There are often less obtrusive ways of doing things:http://www.conservationsolution.com/projects/historic-structures/ross-building-facades/ I helped install an Impressed Current Cathodic Protection system on this building - the system was installed after chiseling out mortar joints above the large modillions at the top of the building. After the system components were installed (a very painstaking process), the joints were repointed. Unless you knew it was there (which now you do), you wouldn't know it was there! Item of note: while on this job I had a Nextel phone. Somehow, it dropped off the scaffold about 6 stories high, broke apart, and survived! My current phone - id've just left it there. -AD

About 20 Oregon's DOT undertook such an electrical fix on a beautiful concrete bridge on coastal route 1, near Heceta Head Lighthouse. The lacework of electrical this and that is not too visually annoying. The DOT may have info about how effective that fix has been. At the time, people had high expectations and hope.
